Dawes Receives ISBE Award of Meritorious Service
Vienna High School English Instructor Mrs. Grayson Dawes has been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) with an Award of Meritorious Service through the Illinois Teacher of the Year program. The award honors educators across the state who demonstrate excellence in teaching, leadership, and service to their school communities.
The Award of Meritorious Service is presented to teachers who make significant contributions beyond daily classroom responsibilities. Dawes was recognized for her instructional impact, commitment to student growth, and leadership within the school.
Mrs. Dawes is a Vienna Grade School and Vienna High School graduate. After high school, she went on to earn her Bachelor's of Science in English Degree at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Masters of Art in Education Degree, with an emphasis in Reading at McKendree University and has graduate work in both English and Social Studies. She not only serves as a certified Secondary Instructor, but also teaches Literature, English, and Education at the collegiate level.
Principal, Mr. John Giffin, shared, “Mrs. Dawes’s approach to teaching sets a very high standard. She consistently challenges students to think critically and communicate effectively. Her dedication to academic rigor and student development makes her a deserving recipient of this recognition.”
“Mrs. Dawes has demonstrated a deep commitment to student achievement, curriculum development, and fostering a culture of academic rigor. Her work exemplifies the level of excellence we strive for across the Vienna system. I have witnessed her spend time outside of the classroom helping students increase scores on placement exams for college and at the same time work with students going directly into careers post high to ensure they earn Work Keys readiness. Within her curriculum she has also integrated numerous assignments that ensure all students have professional resumes and other key ingredients so that they can be life ready post High School. Vienna is fortunate to have several master teachers and Grayson is one of them,” said Superintendent Dr. Joshua Stafford.
Mrs. Rebecca Guest, Dean of Instruction, shared, “Mrs. Dawes is deeply committed to continuous improvement in her craft. She consistently seeks out innovative and research-based instructional practices to ensure all learners are supported and challenged. Her intentional approach to teaching not only strengthens student achievement today, but also equips students with the skills and confidence they need for future success.”
The ISBE program annually recognizes educators who demonstrate sustained contributions to their schools and communities. Mrs. Dawes joins a select group of Illinois educators to receive this designation.
